Back in 2012, I was sitting in a cramped coffee shop on Queen Street, helping my friend sort through a shoebox full of receipts. She'd just launched her bakery and was totally overwhelmed by the tax stuff. That's when it hit me - small business owners shouldn't have to feel lost when it comes to their numbers.
I'd spent years working at big firms where everything felt... I dunno, disconnected? Like we were just pushing papers around instead of actually helping people build something real. So I took the leap and started Crystal Venor Accounting Services right here in Toronto. The name? Well, "crystal" for clarity and "venor" - an old word meaning to come forth or appear - because I wanted to make financial clarity appear for folks who needed it most.
Fast forward to today, and we've helped hundreds of small to medium businesses across Ontario get their financial house in order. We're not about fancy jargon or making things complicated. Just honest advice, solid tax planning, and the kind of service where you can actually reach us when you need us.
Started as a one-person operation in a shared office space. Just me, a laptop, and way too much coffee. Landed my first five clients through word-of-mouth, all small businesses trying to figure out their first year-end.
Brought on two amazing accountants who shared my vision. We moved into our Bay Street office - felt pretty fancy! Client base grew to 45 businesses, mostly retail and professional services.
Decided to focus on what we do best - tax planning and financial advisory for SMEs. Stopped trying to be everything to everyone. Best decision we ever made, honestly.
Like everyone else, we had to adapt fast. Helped clients navigate CEWS, CERB, and all those programs. Went fully remote, then hybrid. Realized our clients valued flexibility as much as we did.
Hit 200+ active clients and expanded our advisory services. Added year-end planning sessions that became super popular. Team grew to eight fantastic people who actually care about the work.
Still here on Bay Street, still obsessed with making accounting less painful for business owners. We've got the experience, the team, and honestly, we still love what we do. That's gotta count for something.
